Aberdeen Finally Sees Sunshine After 21 Days of Grey Skies! 🌞 | UK Weather Update (2026)

Aberdeen's 21-Day Sunless Spell Ends: A Ray of Sunshine Breaks Through the Grey

After 21 days of relentless grey skies, Aberdeen, Scotland, finally witnessed the sun's embrace, marking the end of the area's longest sunless period since 1957. Residents of the Granite City were treated to a glimpse of the sun late Thursday afternoon, with the last recorded sunshine on January 21st.

The Met Office confirmed that a brief 30-minute window of sunshine was officially recorded in the Dyce area between 3-4 pm. This followed weeks of relentless rain across the region and the UK, with Aboyne in Aberdeenshire alone receiving over 277mm of rain in January, nearly four times the monthly average. The year began with heavy snow across northeastern Scotland, and the first 10 days of February brought nearly a third of the average February rainfall to southeast England.

The wintry weather persists, with a yellow warning for snow and ice in place for most of Scotland and northern England until 12 noon on Friday. The Met Office's Grahame Madge attributes the cold temperatures to an Arctic maritime air mass. He explains, 'We've issued warnings for snow and ice across Scotland and northern England. There may be some snow showers further south, but we're not expecting significant impacts. The conditions will be brief before another Atlantic system brings change over the weekend. For the next few days, expect colder temperatures and a different feel.'

BBC Scotland weather presenter Judith Ralston highlights the positive change, stating, 'The weather pattern is shifting, breaking free from the cloud, rain, and biting winds. A northerly air mass will bring drier, brighter conditions, with sunshine on Friday and Saturday and a few wintry showers on Friday.'

Despite the impending change, the wintry weather is expected to persist, with a yellow warning for snow and ice in place for most of Scotland and northern England until 12 noon on Friday.
