A sense of frustration lingers as Paul Heckingbottom, manager of Preston North End, reflects on his team's 4-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. The game, played at the Riverside, saw Boro dominate with goals from Alan Browne, Tommy Conway (a brace), and Morgan Whittaker.
But here's where it gets controversial... Heckingbottom believes Boro's tactical shift caught his team off guard. Boro manager Kim Hellberg implemented a fluid 3-4-3 formation, bringing back Dael Fry and giving former Preston player Browne the freedom to attack down the right wing.
"The goals were all mistakes," Heckingbottom lamented. "You can't win games when you gift goals like that. The first was weak, and the second saw a defender 10 yards behind the line, playing the striker onside. Add two goalkeeper errors, and we've essentially handed the game to Boro."
Heckingbottom continued, "They're a good side, but I can't accept that we just roll over because they're good. We were beaten by a better side, and that's something I won't accept. We've shown we can play at that level, but we need to do it consistently over a full season."
And this is the part most people miss... Heckingbottom acknowledged that Boro's tactical change was a surprise. "They usually play the same way, but today they went 3-4-3. Whether that was a response to us, I don't know. But it worked, and Browne had the freedom to roam as a wing-back."
