Get ready, horror fans! Kumail Nanjiani, the multi-talented comedian, actor, writer, and producer known for roles in 'Eternals' and 'The Big Sick,' is stepping behind the camera to direct his first feature film, a horror movie titled 'Howl.'
This exciting news comes straight from the Comedy Means Business podcast, where Nanjiani shared his enthusiasm for the project. He explained that the script for 'Howl' resonated with him so strongly that he felt compelled to direct it. "I don’t know if I know how to direct, but I think I know how to direct this movie," he revealed. It seems the right story can ignite a whole new passion!
Nanjiani, along with his wife Emily V. Gordon, are huge genre fans, consuming sci-fi and horror movies, which makes this directorial debut a natural fit. He emphasized that it wasn't a conscious decision to direct a horror film, but rather, he connected with 'Howl' on a deeper level. "I get this movie. It’s got a very specific tone, and I was like, ‘I see this tone in my head. I know exactly how this should be,’” he explained.
And this is the part most people miss... Nanjiani is following a trend, as he points out that several comedians have successfully transitioned into the horror genre. He specifically mentions Jordan Peele, Josh Ruben, and Zach Cregger as examples of comedians who have made a name for themselves in horror. He believes their success has paved the way for his own venture.
While plot details are still under wraps, 'Howl' is slated to begin production next year. The film will be produced by Winter Coat Films, the production company Nanjiani launched last year with Gordon and producer Dani Melia.
