The North East must adapt to the rise of artificial intelligence, or risk being left behind in its wake.
In an exciting development for the region, QTS Data Centres, an American company, is in the process of constructing a massive £10 billion campus at Cambois. This ambitious project is anticipated to create nearly 3,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 400 permanent positions once the facility is fully operational.
Brian Herlihy, the chief energy and strategy officer of QTS, has emphasized the extensive economic advantages this project will bring to the local community. He noted, "When you visit our various sites, it becomes clear that an entire ecosystem is developing around the data centres, which includes universities and venture labs." This statement highlights the interconnectedness of educational institutions and innovation hubs that thrive alongside such developments.
The scale of investment—£10 billion—is astonishing, and a significant portion of this capital will circulate within the local economy. Herlihy pointed out, "We prioritize hiring from within the community and sourcing supplies locally. As a result, hotels and restaurants will also benefit from the influx of visitors attracted by these new opportunities."
He concluded with a powerful note on the impact of such investments: "£10 billion can make a profound difference."
But here's where it gets controversial—will this focus on AI and technology truly uplift all sectors of the community, or could it widen existing disparities? Are we ready for such a transformative shift? Share your thoughts below!
